We won the Nancy Ovens Award!
It was with great delight that we recieved an award for the visionary play opportunities on the Auchlone site. The Family Forest, Nature Kindergarten, summer camps and out of school care were all acknowledged with the Nancy Ovens award on Saturday 10th Sept 2011. Steve, Helen, Christine, parents and children were all there in Dundee to celebrate the moment. The vision is only one part of the story, having people around me to help to achieve that vision is so very important to the whole movement. So well done to everyone across the company who all help in some way to move forward the Right of Children to naturalistic outdoor play and most importantly for giving children their right to be heard.
About the Trust
Following her death in September 2002 friends, colleagues and members of her immediate family established The Nancy Ovens Trust in 2003 in memory of Nancy Ovens MBE. Nancy campaigned tirelessly for over 40 years to improve play and youth work opportunities for children and young people across Scotland, the UK and internationally. An aim of the Trust is the promotion and the development of quality children's play provision. To this end it has established the Nancy Ovens Play Awards which are now in their fourth year; convening awards for a range of quality play achievements. The criteria for the Awards requires Children's play provision to show that they:
• Actively involve children and young people in the design of their play areas
• Provide flexible and varied physical environment
• Provide for creative, social, active and quiet play
• Ensure play areas are physically and culturally accessible
In seeking and being granted this prestigious award, community groups and local authorities are provided with a national standard for play areas that is widely welcomed by children and play organisations from across Scotland.
